Deep Brain Stimulation

With support from the Children’s Hospital Trust, private donors and industry, the field of functional neurosurgery has seen an expansion of the services provided at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital to include deep brain stimulation for movement disorders. This service, provided for the most severe cases is lead by paediatric neurosurgeon Dr Nico Enslin.

CIPHER grant for Dr Nelleke Langerak

Postdoctoral fellow Dr Nelleke Langerak is one of only five researchers worldwide to be awarded a prestigious CIPHER grant project is entitled “HIV encephalopathy: definition of the natural history, physical characteristics and imaging findings in a group of children with gait abnormalities”. 

Prof Allan Taylor promoted to Head of Clinical Unit

Associate Professor Allan Taylor has been promoted to a newly created Head of Clinical Unit (Principal Specialist) post. Prof Taylor, who established the neurointerventional service at GSH following training with Professor Pierre Lajaunias in Paris, is an internationally respected leader in the field.

UCT Neuroscience Initiative launched

A major neurosciences initiative has been launched at UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences in partnership with Groote Schuur academic hospital complex. The Neurosciences Initiative will bring together clinicians and researchers from a wide range of specialities, fostering collaboration in the treatment of a number of neurological disorders, including stroke, central nervous system infection and trauma, among others.

 
Wellcome Fellowship for Dr Rohlwink

In 2014, Dr Ursula Rohlwink was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust-Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Initiative (CIDRI) after completing her PhD on novel biomarkers of neurological tissue injury and inflammation in paediatric tuberculous meningitis.
